Written Test - Airline Preparatory Classes

Airline preparatory classes typically include written tests as part of the curriculum to help students prepare for the types of tests they may encounter during the hiring process for an airline. These tests may include assessments of math, physics, and navigation knowledge, as well as tests of cognitive abilities and situational judgment. The specific content and format of the written tests will vary depending on the airline and the position for which the student is applying.

Math and physics:

Airline pilots need to have a good understanding of mathematical and physical concepts, such as weight and balance, performance, and navigation. Therefore, written tests in these areas will be crucial to assess the student's knowledge.

Cognitive abilities:

Written tests may also be used to evaluate a student's cognitive abilities, such as their ability to process information quickly, think critically, and make decisions under pressure.

Situational judgment:

These tests aim to evaluate the student's ability to handle different scenarios, such as emergencies or unexpected situations that may arise during a flight.

Airline-specific knowledge:

Some written tests will be specific to the airline and the position for which the student is applying. This can include knowledge of company procedures, flight operations, and regulations.

Aptitude Test
The aptitude test is typically the first stage of the selection process for an airline pilot. As you mentioned, it typically focuses on basic math and physics concepts that can be found in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade NCERT textbooks. Preparing with sample papers, which are readily available online, can be helpful in familiarizing yourself with the format and types of questions that will be on the test. You also mentioned that the aptitude test for the Flight Training Academy (FTA) is relatively simple, focusing on basic math skills such as multiplication, division, and percentages, as well as English skills. It is important to note that the aptitude test for the CAE and FTA may be different, and the requirements and selection process for each may vary, so it's always good to check with the specific training academy you are applying for.
Written exam
Written exam was a separate step in the selection process for the airline pilot training program, for which an additional fee was required. The exam was on September 21st, 2019 and was reported to be easy, testing knowledge through 12th grade in subjects such as physics, math, reasoning, and English. The exam had 100 questions in total. The results were announced the next day via email, and you were able to clear the exam. After passing the written exam, you were then called for a compass test. The compass test is one of the selection process that measure cognitive abilities, like spatial awareness, memory, or problem-solving skills, it is also commonly used in the selection process for pilots.

Detailed Explanation of the Written Exam for Airline Preparatory Classes
  • The written test for Airline Preparatory Classes is an important aspect for those looking to pursue a career in the aviation industry. One of the first stages of the process is the aptitude test, which is based on knowledge from 10th, 11th, and 12th NCERT textbooks. The aptitude test is considered to be relatively easy if you have a good grasp of the basics, and sample papers can be found online to help prepare for the exam. In addition to the aptitude test, there is also a written exam that requires knowledge of 10 plus 2 English, mathematics, and physics.
  • The written exam is a crucial step in the selection process and requires a significant amount of preparation. The syllabus for the written exam can be found on the FB I— website and applications can be made through the same platform. The exam itself is relatively straightforward, but can be tricky in certain areas, particularly the English section. In the English part, it is important to keep in mind that in error detection part, you should not read the sentence again and again otherwise you'll get an error even if there isn't one.
  • The physics section of the written exam hardly has any numericals and the answers to the theory questions are all very tricky. A detailed knowledge of all the topics as per the syllabus given when applying is helpful. The majority of students will score an equal number of marks in the physics and math sections, but it is the English section which can turn the tables. The total time for the exam is two hours, and the physics and math sections combined will not take more than an hour. Therefore, it is important to concentrate on English as all the options seem to overlap each other.
  • Another important aspect of the written test is the FTA or Flight Training Admission test. This test is considered to be very easy, and consists of 3 papers: 2 math papers and 1 English paper. Each paper is given a time limit of 30 minutes, for a total of 1 hour and 30 minutes. The questions are multiple choice with 4 options. The first math paper, Numerical Skills, has 25 questions that are easy and focus on concepts such as percentages, conversions, and units of measurement. The third paper is English, which has 50 questions on topics such as tense, modals, and prepositions. In order to pass, each paper must be cleared with a minimum of 70% correct answers. For example, in the English paper, 35 out of 50 questions must be answered correctly to pass. In the Math 1st paper 14 out of 20 questions must be answered correctly and for Math 2nd paper 18 out of 25 questions must be answered correctly.
  • In conclusion, the written test for Airline Preparatory Classes is an important aspect of the selection process for those looking to pursue a career in the aviation industry. The aptitude test is relatively easy, but the written exam requires a significant amount of preparation. The syllabus for the written exam can be found on the FB I— website and applications can be made through the same platform. The English section of the written exam can be tricky, and it is important to concentrate on this section as it can make a significant difference in the overall results. Additionally, the FTA or Flight Training Admission test is considered to be very easy and consists of 3 papers: 2 math papers and 1 English paper, each paper must be cleared with a minimum of 70% correct answers.

Be Prepared for Cadet Pilot Program Vacancies
It is important to be prepared for any potential Cadet pilot program vacancies that may become available at airlines such as IndiGo, Air Arabia, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Spice Jet, and Singapore Airlines. Due to the halt in airline vacancies for the past few years due to the pandemic, competition for these positions is likely to be high. Therefore, it is advisable to start preparing early for the various stages of the selection process, including the written exam, Compass/CASS test, psychometry assessment, group discussion/group activity, and panel interview. By being well-prepared, you will increase your chances of being successful in securing a position in the Cadet pilot program in the first attempt.
Aviation Popularity and Increased Competition for Airlines in the Post-COVID Era
This course was designed to help you gain more insight into the entire cadet screening and evaluation process; to tell you what to do and not do, to score points with your resume, written tests and most of all, your interviews; and to increase your chances of getting hired.
These days, people want to complete their CPL exams as soon as possible. Nobody wants to stay at home and wants to get hired by an airline as soon as possible. They feel this way because they don’t want to burden their family. As a result, only those who score above 90% in every exam get selected, not those who clear the exam.
So, as you can see, you have to be prepared for each and every stage. Golden Epaulettes is here to prepare you rigorously for each and every stage of the interview.
